Healthy Alternative for Baby’s First Birthday Treat

20130120_153842It’s so hard to believe, but Ruth had her first birthday last week!  And as you can assume, I’m not the mom who really wanted Ruth to have a standard cake because of all the sugar….  So, I chose a healthy alternative that was just as good (in her mind) and just as fun for us to watch!

For her, all I did was puree an avocado and a banana using a food processor and add some dry cocoa for a chocolate treat (the avocado and banana have to be very ripe and if you use a large avocado, you may want two medium bananas).  The amount of cocoa can vary depending on the size of the avocado and banana, but add the minimum amount to make it a smooth chocolate brown color.  The banana makes it really sweet and the avocado adds a very smooth texture to where it looks like “normal” pudding!

HAPPY HEALTHY BIRTHDAY!!!

And believe it or not, this has a wonderful flavor that you may also enjoy!  I have another post with a more detailed recipe for Chocolate Avocado Banana Pudding that I really like.  It may sound crazy, but it’s definitely worth a try!  The trick is using ripe avocados that are not bitter and sweet ripe bananas – I always taste both my avocado and banana before making the pudding to make sure that neither one are bitter or tart.  If you mix it all together and you end up with a bitter taste, that is a result of poor ingredients which I have done a few times and not enjoyed.  But if you can get your hands on good fruit, it is delightful!  And you can eat this with absolutely no guilt – actually you can eat it with pride in that it is very healthy and good for you!  It also makes a great pregnancy snack :-)

Enjoy!

  1. Happy Birthday, little one!! I love her name; you don’t hear that one much anymore! Is it a family name? We named our daughter Maggie which is short for Marguerite (her grandmother). I adore older names! <3

    • Thank you! We chose Ruth for her name because we really want our children’s names to have meaning and we love the character of Ruth in the Bible – probably one of my favorite stories. We are hoping and praying for her to have similar character :-) .

      • Oh, I wondered if it was for biblical reasons! :) We also have a Joshua (9) and Samuel (16 months) so I understand your reasoning there!! ;) Love it.
